Oxytocin is a naturally occurring nonapeptide hormone made in the hypothalamus and released from the posterior pituitary, with an internal disulfide bond between its two cysteines. In the literature it acts on oxytocin receptors to drive uterine contraction and milk letdown and to modulate social bonding and sexual behavior. Unlike most compounds in this directory, synthetic injectable oxytocin is an established FDA-approved medicine — but research-chemical or intranasal versions sold to laboratories are not the approved product.
Regulatory status: Injectable oxytocin (e.g., Pitocin) is FDA-approved for induction and augmentation of labor and control of postpartum bleeding. Intranasal oxytocin for social-bonding or sexual-health uses is NOT FDA-approved and is investigational; research-chemical oxytocin is not the approved drug.
