SS-31 (elamipretide) is a synthetic cell-permeable tetrapeptide that binds cardiolipin on the inner mitochondrial membrane. As the drug elamipretide it received FDA accelerated approval in 2025 (brand Forzinity) for Barth syndrome; peptide sold as a research chemical is not the approved finished drug product.
SS-31 is the research name for elamipretide; it contains the non-standard residue 2,6-dimethyltyrosine (Dmt) and a D-arginine. On-file CAS 736992-21-5 matches PubChem.
Regulatory status: On September 19, 2025 the FDA granted accelerated approval to elamipretide (Forzinity) to improve muscle strength in patients with Barth syndrome; other uses remain investigational.
