Open any research-peptide store and you’ll see the same number over and over: 99% purity. It’s on the product page, the vial, and the marketing. It has become table stakes — which is exactly why it’s a weak signal on its own. A number that every vendor claims, honest or not, can’t tell you much until you understand what it actually measures.
What the 99% actually measures
The purity figure comes from HPLC — High-Performance Liquid Chromatography. HPLC separates a sample into its components and reports how much of the detected material is a single compound. “99% purity” means that in that analysis, 99% of what was detected was one substance and roughly 1% was impurities or by-products. That’s genuinely useful: it says the sample is clean, not a mix of leftovers from synthesis.
But purity is a statement about composition — how clean the sample is — and nothing more. Read literally, “99% pure” means “99% of this is one thing.” It quietly assumes three other things that the number itself never proves.
The three things 99% doesn’t tell you
Here’s where a purity percentage stops and other tests have to take over.

Identity. Purity says the sample is mostly one molecule; it doesn’t say which molecule. Confirming that the clean substance is genuinely the labeled peptide takes mass spectrometry, which matches the measured molecular weight to the expected weight. Quantity. Purity describes the material that’s there, not how much of it there is. A perfectly pure 10 mg vial that was only filled to 7 mg is still “99% pure” — you’re just short 30% of what you paid for. Net content is its own measurement, and most purity claims say nothing about it.
Provenance. A number floating on a product page proves nothing unless it’s tied to a document — a certificate of analysis with a batch or lot number, a testing lab, and a date. Without that link, a “99.9%” claim can’t be matched to the vial in your hand.
Why a verified 98% beats an unverified 99.9%
Once you separate composition from identity, quantity, and provenance, the marketing math inverts. A vendor advertising 99.9% with no COA, no lab named, and no batch number has given you a bigger number and less proof. A vendor showing a verifiable 98% — with a mass-spec identity match and a batch number you can tie to your order — has answered the questions that actually protect you.
The tenth of a percent almost never matters. The documentation always does. That’s why our checks weight a real, verifiable certificate far more heavily than the size of the headline number.
